Chris Sutton has called for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to receive a touchline ban following his behavior during Sunday’s match against Tottenham.
Klopp received a yellow card for running towards the fourth official and celebrating Liverpool’s last-minute winner in the 4-3 victory at Anfield. Sutton believes that a fine would not be sufficient punishment for Klopp, who has a history of such incidents.
Referees’ body the PGMOL rejected Klopp’s claim that referee Paul Tierney had acted improperly.
Sutton emphasized that Klopp’s actions set a bad example and that a touchline ban is warranted. Ref Support UK CEO Martin Cassidy also supports the call for a ban.
Ref Support UK has urged the Football Association to implement stricter penalties to discourage misconduct towards match officials, including points deductions.
CEO Martin Cassidy suggested that a ban of at least three games should be given to those who act inappropriately towards referees.
Additionally, he recommended the FA consider introducing points deductions at all levels for repeat offenders.
Cassidy’s comments followed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s behavior during Sunday’s match against Tottenham, for which he received a yellow card. Klopp had previously received a one-match ban and a £30,000 fine for an incident in October 2020.
