Since her diagnosis in 2021, she has experienced intense joint pain and swelling, especially when exposed to sunlight. To manage her condition, Ysabella has learned to limit her outdoor activities, often using an umbrella when venturing outside.

“Initially, we didn’t think it was serious; I was frequently sick, and my immune system was weak,” Ysabella shared. “But when the symptoms became a daily occurrence, I knew something was wrong. My fingers were stuck, and moving them was excruciating.”

Ysabella experiences other symptoms such as chest pain, fatigue, fever, and hair loss, all of which are typical of SLE. She takes vitamin D supplements to compensate for her lack of sun exposure. “When I’m out in the sun, my symptoms worsen dramatically,” she said. “I try to stay indoors as much as possible. Even though I can’t do everything my friends can, I’m learning to listen to my body. Just because there’s no cure doesn’t mean there’s no hope. It won’t define me.”

Dr. Humeira Badsha, a founding member of the Middle East Arthritis Foundation, explains that juvenile arthritis and other autoimmune diseases like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis affect teens and pose a different challenge compared to osteoarthritis, which is more common among older adults.

“In teenagers, autoimmune conditions like juvenile arthritis can be life-altering,” Dr. Badsha noted. “While osteoarthritis affects about 20% of the population, the incidence of juvenile arthritis in the MENA region is around 5.34 per 100,000 people.”

AI to the Rescue

Dr. Badsha and her colleagues are developing an AI tool to streamline insurance approvals and improve patient access to specialists. “Insurance approvals for expensive drugs can take a long time,” she explained. “On average, insurers return with three queries before pre-authorizing arthritis medication. Our AI system is designed to speed up this process.”

The AI system allows doctors to upload detailed reports, including previous treatments and their effectiveness, and suggests the most cost-effective solutions. This process takes minutes, compared to the days it might take a specialist to review each case manually.

“The AI eliminates delays and reduces costs,” said Dr. Badsha. “By streamlining the approval process, patients receive the treatment they need faster, minimizing pain and improving quality of life.”

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: An Overview

Lupus is a complex autoimmune disease influenced by genetic and environmental factors, hormones, and certain medications. It disproportionately affects women, especially those aged 15-44, and is more common among African Americans, Asian Americans, African Caribbeans, and Hispanic Americans.

Diagnosis can be challenging, often involving a combination of symptom analysis, physical exams, and laboratory tests. A positive test for anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) from a blood sample is often used for confirmation.

Raising Awareness and Promoting Early Detection

The Middle East Arthritis Foundation (MEAF) is marking World Arthritis Day on October 12 with events across the region to promote early detection, prevention, and better management of arthritis and related conditions. Arthritis impacts over 350 million people globally, with approximately one in five affected in the UAE.

By raising awareness and harnessing technology like AI, the medical community hopes to offer more effective and timely treatments for teens like Ysabella and Emma, giving them the support they need to lead fulfilling lives despite their condition.

The combination of AI technology and traditional medical care offers a new horizon for teens battling juvenile arthritis in the UAE’s extreme climate. By enabling faster diagnosis, personalized treatment, and remote monitoring, AI helps young patients manage their condition effectively, giving them a chance at a healthier and more active life despite the challenges posed by the weather.
