Dubai to develop AI solutions to analyse traffic and reduce congestion
Dubai is set to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) technology to analyze traffic patterns and alleviate congestion on its roads.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an advanced Enterprise Platform in collaboration with top global firms, aimed at designing and developing AI and data science solutions at world-class standards. The platform is specifically designed to process RTA-owned data and restructure it for training machine learning models, enabling innovation and efficiency in various operations such as predictive maintenance, public transportation route planning, and crowd management.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the platform’s launch demonstrates the commitment of RTA to transform Dubai into the world’s smartest city. By harnessing the power of AI, the platform aims to enhance residents’ well-being, promote sustainability, and improve service efficiency. The extensive storage capacity of RTA’s big data platform has been integrated with the AI platform, enabling the utilization of historical data for the development of use cases that meet the strategic and operational requirements of RTA.

One of the key applications of the AI platform is the analysis of traffic data to identify patterns and forecasts, facilitating efficient road network planning and the reduction of traffic congestion. The platform serves as a foundation for a wide range of projects outlined in RTA’s AI project roadmap, encompassing over 100 use cases across various domains. These include predictive maintenance for RTA’s assets and properties, AI-integrated smart services for customers and employees, and streamlining administrative tasks.

The incorporation of AI technologies in RTA’s systems aligns with the UAE’s AI strategy and underscores the significance of data and AI in supporting decision-making and anticipating future requirements. The ultimate goal is to position RTA as a leading government agency on both local and global scales. The AI platform stands out for its ability to train deep machine learning models and offers pre-built algorithms, eliminating the need for writing source code. It facilitates algorithm performance comparison, enabling the selection of the most suitable one in terms of speed and accuracy. Moreover, the platform ensures compliance with AI principles and ethics set by the Dubai Digital Authority by implementing a mechanism to interpret AI model decisions.

RTA has also invested in training several Emiratis in leadership, supervisory, and technical roles to analyze data, extract valuable insights, and develop use cases on the AI platform. This initiative aims to enhance in-house resources and encourage development across various areas. With the launch of the AI platform, Dubai is taking significant strides towards becoming a smarter city, leveraging AI technology to enhance transportation services and improve the overall quality of life for its residents.
