The Dubai-based airline is collaborating with Hivebotics, a company known for manufacturing autonomous bathroom cleaning robots, to develop this innovative aircraft-cleaning technology. Hivebotics specializes in automating high-risk and specialized tasks using advanced hardware and software intelligence.

“Our initial product was actually an autonomous toilet-cleaning robot,” said Rishab Patwari, Hivebotics’ chief executive and co-founder. “The airline approached us to see if we could adapt our toilet-cleaning robot for use in aircraft cleaning.”

The aircraft-cleaning robot prototype was displayed at ForsaTEK, Emirates Group’s annual showcase of technologies shaping the future of aviation. Patwari emphasized that the goal is to make cleaners’ jobs more efficient, not obsolete.

“We want humans to focus on the most significant tasks while robots handle the repetitive ones,” he explained. “The robot should perform 80 percent of the baseline cleaning, with humans conducting inspections.”

Patwari noted that developing an aircraft-cleaning robot was simpler than creating the autonomous toilet-cleaning machine. “If we had known about it earlier, we would have started with this one,” he added.

Virtual Reality Training for Aviation Professionals

In addition to robotics, the ForsaTEK exhibition featured virtual reality (VR) training solutions for cabin crew and aviation engineers. Two companies, JigSpace and Senseglove, presented their innovative VR technologies to the airline.

JigSpace utilizes Apple Vision Pro to create immersive, hands-on 3D presentations. This technology allows aviation engineering students at Emirates Aviation University to explore and manipulate detailed models, such as jet engines, from all angles. Students and employees can engage in comprehensive training experiences without the need for physical equipment.

Senseglove showcased its Nova 2 haptic gloves, which enable VR training and muscle memory development by providing tactile, force, and contact feedback. Emirates is considering using these gloves to enhance cabin crew training, such as teaching the best practices for opening and closing cabin doors.

“If you want to train people to open a cabin door, you need a plane, which may have limited training capacity,” said Frank Goovaerts, chief executive of Senseglove. “With this headset and gloves, people can learn 80 percent digitally and the rest physically, reducing costs.”

ForsaTEK: Pioneering Aviation Technology

The ForsaTEK aviation technology event, which debuted in 2023, is named from a combination of “forsa,” meaning “opportunities” in Arabic, and a play on the word “technology,” along with Emirates’ airline code, EK. This event highlights Emirates’ commitment to embracing and showcasing technologies that will shape the future of aviation.
