Lime, the US-based e-mobility company, is considering expanding its services in Dubai by launching a new pedal-less electric bicycle, known as the LimeGlider, as part of its effort to meet the rising demand for micromobility in the fast-growing city.

Already operating a fleet of 1,200 e-scooters across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Lime could introduce the LimeGlider e-bike to Dubai by 2025. If launched, Dubai would join Seattle and Zurich, where the LimeGlider is currently being tested. “We’re talking to cities like Dubai about introducing the LimeGlider and working hard to bring it to more markets by next summer,” said Jason Parrish, senior director for product management at Lime, during a demonstration of the bike. However, no firm timeline has been set for the launch in Dubai.

While pedal-less e-bikes aren’t new, they remain rare in the shared micromobility sector. Lime’s no-pedal design aims to provide an easy, sustainable alternative to car trips, supporting Dubai’s push for environmental and economic sustainability.

The presence of dedicated cycling lanes is crucial for the success of micromobility options, explained Hadi Karam, Lime’s regional director for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. “As Dubai’s population grows, so does the demand for micromobility solutions. Expanding cycling lanes will be key if we want to replace more cars and shift people to these options,” he added.

The pricing for LimeGlider rides would be similar to the current rates for Lime’s e-scooters, with fares shown on the app before a ride begins. For reference, e-scooter rides start at Dh3.20, with each additional minute costing Dh1.20.

Designed with a range of around 70km—roughly 20 trips on average—the LimeGlider can reach speeds of 25kph, adjustable to meet local market regulations. Lime has optimized the bike’s center of gravity to ensure better balance and stability.

Here’s what makes Lime’s no-pedal e-bike unique and why it could be a game-changer for Dubai’s transportation landscape.

1. Revolutionizing the Ride: What’s a No-Pedal E-Bike?

Unlike traditional bicycles, no-pedal e-bikes offer a completely pedal-free experience, relying entirely on a throttle-powered motor. This design aims to make riding as simple as possible—ideal for users seeking quick, easy trips with minimal effort. These e-bikes cater to those who may not be familiar with cycling but still want the benefits of a micromobility option without the need for pedaling, making it accessible for people of all fitness levels.

2. Micromobility Growth in Dubai: A Perfect Fit for Lime’s E-Bikes

Dubai’s commitment to expanding micromobility solutions aligns well with Lime’s latest innovation. The city has rapidly introduced dedicated lanes, safer infrastructure, and favorable policies to support e-scooters, bicycles, and other micromobility vehicles. By adding no-pedal e-bikes to the mix, Lime could help reduce road congestion and promote a healthier urban environment.

3. Sustainability at the Forefront

No-pedal e-bikes provide a green alternative to short car trips, helping to cut down on emissions. In a city with ambitious sustainability goals like Dubai, these bikes offer an accessible option for quick, eco-friendly commutes. Lime’s focus on shared micromobility supports Dubai’s aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, allowing people to contribute to the environment while enjoying a quick and easy ride.

4. Convenience and Accessibility

With its unique no-pedal approach, Lime’s e-bike is set to be highly user-friendly. Users can expect a ride that requires minimal effort, making it perfect for Dubai’s bustling streets and diverse riders. The e-bikes can easily complement existing transit options, bridging gaps in the last mile and making short commutes far more accessible.

5. Enhanced Safety and Smart Features

Lime’s no-pedal e-bikes are designed with safety in mind, including features like integrated lighting, GPS tracking, and speed control for better rider visibility and stability. As Dubai continues to support micromobility, these smart features align with the city’s dedication to safe, innovative transport solutions.

6. Potential Challenges and Considerations

While the no-pedal e-bike sounds promising, there are some potential challenges to consider. For example, adapting this new type of vehicle to Dubai’s micromobility infrastructure, especially with high temperatures during summer months, could present obstacles. Additionally, managing a responsible rollout to prevent cluttering sidewalks and public spaces will be critical for Lime and city planners alike.

7. Looking Ahead: Lime’s Role in Dubai’s Transportation Future

Lime’s no-pedal e-bike is another step toward an integrated, low-emission transit future for Dubai. By adding this unique option to the city’s transport ecosystem, Lime and Dubai are taking strides in supporting an innovative urban lifestyle.

While Lime hasn’t disclosed the development cost for the LimeGlider, Parrish confirmed it was created entirely in-house. Dubai would be LimeGlider’s initial UAE launch, though Lime is open to expanding the service to other emirates where it aligns with local needs.

The launch of the LimeGlider would cap a successful period for Lime, which recorded over 150 million rides and $600 million in bookings globally in 2023. Lime’s UAE ridership exceeded one million trips last year, highlighting a growing local interest in micromobility.

While demand in the UAE is on the rise, Lime also stresses the importance of responsible riding. In recent months, Dubai authorities have enforced stricter regulations on e-scooter use for safety reasons. “Education is the best way to change rider behavior,” said Karam, underscoring Lime’s commitment to working with authorities to improve safety and promote responsible micromobility in the UAE.
