Microsoft has extended the firmware update support for Surface PCs

Microsoft has extended the firmware update support for many of its Surface PCs to a minimum of six years, an increase from the initial four years. This updated policy applies to Microsoft Surface PCs shipped on or after January 1st, 2021. Notably, devices such as the Surface Pro 7 Plus, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop Studio, Surface Go 3, Surface Pro X Wi-Fi, Surface Laptop SE, Surface Laptop Go 2, Surface Laptop 5, Surface Pro 9, Surface Studio 2 Plus, Surface Go 4, Surface Laptop Go 3, and Surface Laptop Studio 2 will all benefit from at least six years of driver and firmware updates, as outlined in Microsoft’s support documentation.

While Microsoft’s commitment falls short of Google’s recent decision to provide Chromebooks released in 2021 or later with 10 years of automatic updates, this move aligns with the broader industry trend of tech companies aiming to prolong the lifespan of their products. Thegulftalk.com explores how this change by Microsoft contributes to ensuring the longevity and continued functionality of Surface PCs.
