While participating in the Dubai Tennis Championships, the champion of the US Open has actively spoken out in support of those enduring hardship in the Gaza conflict.

In a display of remarkable maturity beyond her 19 years, Coco Gauff faced intense pressure from her opponent, Karolina Pliskova, and engaged in a prolonged dispute with the chair umpire over a controversial call during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. Despite the challenges, Gauff secured a spot in the quarterfinals by staging a comeback to defeat Pliskova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Meanwhile, world number one Iga Swiatek had a smooth 6-1, 6-4 victory over Elina Svitolina.

The spotlight of the day was on Gauff, who not only advanced to the quarterfinals but also earned a place on the prestigious TIME Women of the Year list. Known for her advocacy for racial equality and support for the Black Lives Matter movement, Gauff remained composed during a dispute with the chair umpire over a contested call.

During the second set, at 4-2, Gauff’s serve was called out, leading to a disagreement with the umpire. Despite challenging the call successfully, she was asked to serve again, a decision that sparked a heated argument. Gauff, demonstrating resilience, served out the game and went on to win the second and third sets.

Reflecting on the incident, Gauff emphasized her commitment to advocating for equality and justice, acknowledging her family’s influence on her values. Her inclusion in the TIME Women of the Year list brought her immense joy and a sense of honor.

Gauff’s next challenge is the quarterfinal clash with Anna Kalinskaya. Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and world number one Swiatek also secured spots in the quarterfinals with convincing victories. The tournament promises exciting matchups, with players expressing confidence and anticipation for the upcoming matches.
