Actor Johnny Depp shared his feelings about his role in ‘Jeanne du Barry’, expressing a sense of unexpected fortune during the U.K. premiere. The historical drama, helmed by Maiwenn and featuring Depp alongside herself in leading roles, was briefly introduced by the duo at London’s Curzon theatre in Mayfair.
During a rare public appearance in London, Johnny Depp expressed his gratitude for being offered the role, stating, “I feel very lucky to have been offered the role – strangely, oddly, perversely lucky.” Reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings in Kentucky to portraying the King of France, Louis XV, he remarked on the surreal contrast and the unexpected turns life can take.
He further remarked, “It made no sense to me, I tried to talk her out of it,” acknowledging Maiwenn’s courage in casting him despite his initial reservations. Reflecting on their collaborative journey, he expressed hope that the audience would find the end result worth the challenges they faced.
Maiwenn also delivered a brief speech, sharing her longstanding fascination with Jeanne du Barry and her desire to bring the story to life since 2016, emphasizing Jeanne’s early embodiment of feminist ideals.
‘Jeanne du Barry’, one of Depp’s first projects following his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim, marked by a seven-minute standing ovation for the actor and director, as reported by Variety.
