Netflix is actively exploring the inclusion of “higher-end” or AAA titles into its ever-expanding content library, and this endeavor has brought the renowned GTA franchise into the spotlight. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Netflix is currently in discussions with Rockstar Games to secure licensing for the immensely popular Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series. The streaming giant initially delved into mobile games in 2021, releasing titles based on its hit shows such as Ghost Detective, Vikings, and Love is Blind, with an investment exceeding $1 billion. Netflix’s goal is to diversify its offerings by adding these “higher-end” titles to its catalog, though it remains uncertain whether these titles will be included in the subscription or offered as separate purchases.
It remains unclear whether Netflix intends to bring existing GTA games to its platform or explore mobile adaptations of the beloved titles. Notably, demanding games like GTA V require high-performance PCs, suggesting that Netflix may also be contemplating the introduction of cloud gaming services. While Netflix’s foray into gaming has yet to gain significant traction, with over 70 million downloads spanning approximately 70 titles, it falls short in comparison to the massive gaming industry, especially when considering blockbusters like GTA 5. Therefore, a partnership with Rockstar Games could be a strategic move to bolster its gaming user base.
