Alice Capsey’s Explosive Half-Century Propels England to 12-Run Victory Over Sri Lanka in Rain-Affected T20 Opener at Hove.
In a rain-interrupted T20 series opener at Hove, Alice Capsey, the 19-year-old all-rounder, showcased a scintillating performance, smashing five fours and three sixes on her way to a remarkable 51 off 27 balls. Her efforts were crucial as England amassed 186-4 in a 17-over innings due to the delayed start.
Opening batswoman Danni Wyatt also contributed significantly with a boundary-rich 48 from 30 deliveries, setting a fiery tone for the innings.
Sri Lanka began their response, reaching 23-0 from 3.1 overs before rain once again halted play. Upon resumption, the tourists were assigned a revised target of 68 runs from a mere six overs – a challenging requirement of 45 runs from just 17 balls.
This task became even tougher when 17-year-old debutante Mahika Gaur claimed her first England wicket by dismissing Sri Lanka’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu.
Despite a valiant effort from Sri Lanka, exemplified by Nilakshi de Silva’s three consecutive boundaries in the final over, the visitors fell short, finishing at 55-3.
With this triumph, England takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second T20 encounter is scheduled for Saturday at Chelmsford.
