Rescue efforts continue in southern India after an overcrowded double-decker boat carrying about 50 people capsized on Sunday night, leaving at least 21 people dead. The vessel was reportedly carrying double its capacity, causing it to capsize in muddy waters in the state of Kerala.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Twitter, expressing his grief for the loss of life. Local media reported that many passengers were trapped under the boat in the darkness, and the casualties included women and children on school holiday.

Survivors revealed that many of the passengers were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. At least four people are in critical condition and have been taken to hospital, according to Kerala’s sports and fisheries minister, V Abdurahiman.

The exact number of missing passengers is still unknown as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the tragedy. The death toll may rise as rescue efforts continue and the vessel is recovered from the water.
