Liverpool reclaimed the top spot in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over struggling Burnley on Tuesday, thanks to Darwin Nunez’s first league goal in almost two months. Nunez’s precise finish after six minutes provided an early lead for Liverpool at Turf Moor, but despite numerous opportunities, Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to secure a second goal.
Despite Mohamed Salah hitting the crossbar and disallowing goals for Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott, Burnley managed to hold on. The points were eventually sealed in the 90th minute by Diogo Jota’s goal. Despite being in 19th place, Burnley had their chances in the second half, with Jacob Bruun Larsen’s shot narrowly missing the post.
This win marked Liverpool’s first in three league games, moving them above Arsenal with 42 points at the halfway point of the season. Arsenal, with 40 points, had a chance to respond when they faced West Ham United on Thursday.
Jurgen Klopp expressed relief after the game, acknowledging the hurdles his team faced. He praised Liverpool’s incredible performance but emphasized the importance of overcoming challenges to secure the victory.
The opening stages saw Liverpool dominate, with Nunez’s silky finish putting them ahead. Despite Salah’s efforts being denied by Burnley’s goalkeeper James Trafford, Liverpool continued their attacking play. Gakpo had a disallowed goal, and Salah’s dipping drive hit the crossbar.
