Paris St-Germain has suspended Lionel Messi for two weeks after he traveled to Saudi Arabia without the club’s permission. The trip occurred after PSG’s loss to Lorient, in which Messi played the entire game.
During his suspension, Messi will not participate in any training or matches for the club.
The 35-year-old had requested permission to travel for commercial purposes, but the club denied the request.
In addition to being suspended for two weeks, Lionel Messi has also been fined by PSG. He currently serves as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia. Messi’s contract with PSG expires this summer, after a two-year term.
In March, Barcelona’s vice-president, Rafael Yuste, claimed that the Spanish club was in contact with Messi about a return to the Nou Camp.
So far, Messi has played in 71 games across all competitions for PSG, scoring 31 goals and providing 34 assists.
He helped PSG win the Ligue 1 title last season. As PSG looks to secure their ninth league title in 11 seasons, with a five-point lead and five games left to play, Messi will be absent for the upcoming matches against Troyes and Ajaccio.
