Kylian Mbappe’s decisive retaken penalty led France to a victory over Greece, solidifying their flawless record in Euro 2024 qualifying. The French hosts earned the spot-kick due to a reckless challenge from Konstantinos Mavropanos, who accidentally kicked the head of Antoine Griezmann while he was in mid-air.
Although Odysseas Vlachodimos initially saved Mbappe’s first attempt, the penalty was retaken due to Greek defenders encroaching into the penalty area. Mbappe made no mistake on his second chance. Mavropanos later received a red card for bringing down Randal Kolo Muani.
France’s win in all four qualifying matches without conceding a goal places them at the top of Group B, six points clear of Greece. Despite Griezmann requiring a bandage due to the injury, France held on during 14 minutes of injury time to secure the victory. In other Group B action, the Republic of Ireland earned their first points with a comfortable 3-0 home win against Gibraltar.
