Kanaf Center in Sharjah Opens

In a significant step toward protecting children from abuse, Sharjah is set to open Kanaf, a center offering comprehensive legal, psychological, and social support. This refuge, opening next week, is a crucial initiative in the emirate’s commitment to child safety, addressing the rise in reported cases.

Hanadi Al Yafei, Director of Sharjah’s Child Safety Department, emphasized Kanaf’s role in safeguarding children across nationalities within Sharjah. The center, dealing with cases involving children and teenagers up to 18, boasts a collaborative team from various departments ensuring the welfare of the children involved.

Notably, the surge in reported child abuse cases in 2022 prompted the establishment of Kanaf. Sharjah Child and Family Protection Centre received 3,487 reports, up from 2,168 in 2021. The new center aims to streamline the process by conducting investigations, evaluations, and therapy on-site, minimizing the need for children to visit multiple departments.

Kanaf’s approach includes mental health consultants, coordinators, and child care specialists supporting the dedicated team. A critical aspect is ensuring minimal impact on children, with measures like video conferencing for court sessions and recorded interviews to avoid repeat questioning.

Since the introduction of Wadeema’s Law in 2016, the UAE has been committed to the rights and welfare of children. Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, Chairwoman of Sharjah Private Education Authority, highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance child safety in schools, including appointing child care coordinators and alternative educational plans for victims.

The holistic approach extends to Sharjah’s social services department, with Afaf Al Marri, the chairman, emphasizing their involvement in evaluations, therapeutic plans, and after-care rehabilitation programs. Suspected cases can be reported through the dedicated child helpline at 800700.

In conclusion, Kanaf emerges as a beacon of hope, embodying Sharjah’s dedication to protecting children from abuse through a multi-faceted support system.
