Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), delivered a poignant message, underscoring the historical significance of the publishing industry and its essential role in our lives. She emphasized the need for the publishing industry to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape while staying true to the power of the written word, which has the capacity to unite or divide us. She pointed out that at this juncture, where tradition meets innovation, publishers have a crucial responsibility in countering the proliferation of misinformation, disinformation, fake news, and divisive algorithms. Their mission is to restore faith in humanity by providing well-researched, verified content, ensuring that truth prevails over falsehood in shaping the future.
Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi delivered this keynote speech during the opening of the 13th Sharjah Publishers Conference, attended by Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, and publishing experts from 106 countries. The conference serves as a platform for industry professionals to address global challenges facing publishers and transform them into opportunities for growth.
Continuing her address, Sheikha Bodour emphasized the importance of publishers in an age where opinions spread rapidly. She stressed the need for publishers to provide a solid foundation of truth, enabling individuals to understand complex issues. Upholding this mission is a sacred duty that underpins the credibility of publishers with their readers and communities, regardless of prevailing trends or circumstances.
The opening day of the conference featured inspirational keynote speeches from industry leaders representing the Arab region and the world, including Yoon Chul Ho, President of the Korean Publishers Association; Núria Cabutí Brull, CEO of Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial; Ian Chapman, CEO & Publisher of Simon & Schuster UK & International; and Jo Henry, Managing Director of BookBrunch.
