Iga Swiatek, the world number one in women’s tennis, began her US Open title defense with an emphatic victory. She defeated unseeded Swedish player Rebecca Peterson with a score of 6-0, 6-1 in the opening match on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Swiatek showcased her dominance by hitting 20 winners and four aces in the match.
Despite mentioning feeling a bit fatigued after reaching the semifinals in both the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments earlier in the month, Swiatek displayed her energy and determination on the court. She demonstrated her prowess by breaking her opponent’s serve and hitting an unreturnable backhand shot, ultimately securing her victory.
Swiatek, who has been the world number one since April 2022, will face Australian Daria Saville in the second round. The Polish player expressed her happiness at being able to play solidly and start the tournament on a positive note, despite the pressure and expectations.
Off the court, Swiatek also enjoyed her time in New York by attending the “Lion King” musical, a tradition she follows during each visit to the US Open.
The victory marks Swiatek’s strong start in her quest to defend her US Open title and continue her success on the international tennis stage.
